Armor of God

Posture matters! Just as our physical posture determines the overall effectiveness of our workout, our spiritual posture (heart, soul, & mind) determines the overall joy and effectiveness of our daily lives. And together, we encourage each other to ‘be strong in the Lord and in His might power.’

Regardless the season, the battles remain the same. And regardless of your circumstances, the Armor of God is free and available! Below you’ll find a brief devotional, supporting scripture, and a one-minute video about each piece of armor.

Let’s move forward armed and empowered, standing firm and burning bright in a posture of His power!

Below we’ll explore each piece of the Armor of God. At the bottom of this page, you find links to recommended YouVersion reading plans to go through independently or with a group as well as Spotify workout playlists and social media images. Or if you’re just eager to move, click the button below!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Ephesians 6:10-13

Armor of God

Paul is very clear about spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6. While we may all have varying views on what this ‘war’ might look like and represent in our own lives, we can’t deny the lies, struggles, and shame we battle each day. Nor can we ignore the bigger visible battles in our communities and nation.

The good news is this: our Father has equipped us to overcome and live in His freedom. Ultimately, God has won, Jesus overcame, we live by the Spirit, and our eternity is with Him!

Isaiah 30:15 states, ‘Your strength will come from settling down in complete dependence on me.’ So as Priscilla Shirer states in her study, let’s ‘believe and receive first, then utilize what you’ve been given.’

My prayer is that as you dive deeper into the Armor of God and Holy Barre as a whole, something fierce, beautiful and wild is awakened in you! May God empower you with His strength, life, love, and beauty!

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

Ephesians 6:14-15

Belt of Truth

For a soldier, the belt was the stabilizer of the body and every other piece of armor. And in barre, your core serves the same purpose for your body. Just think of the stability and balance provided to our souls when we have the belt of Truth wrapped tightly around our waist and our core fully engaged in the Word and its Light!

‘And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ John 8:32. Truth brings freedom, strength, and endurance! When our physical core is weak, our physical posture is poor. When our spiritual core is strong and engaged, our spiritual posture supplies our heart, soul, strength, mind, and relationships with truth and light to overcome darkness. Ladies, engage your core!

Breastplate of Righteousness

‘While the lifestyle of a woman girded in the belt of Truth affirms God’s standard, a woman who puts on the breastplate of righteousness aligns her life to it.’ – Priscilla Shirer.

Righteousness is living out His Truth! When we chose to act against His direction, we leave our heart exposed to the enemy and His lies. So by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, we are guarding our heart! ‘Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.’ – Proverbs 4:23

Now God is perfectly righteous, we are not. But practice makes perfect, right? As we move forward, equipped with His truth and the rest of His armor, we can be confident in our choices and actions and fight the battle protected and empowered!

Read Ephesians 4:22-24

There’s a beautiful correlation between the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteous in regard to breath.  Just place one hand on your belt and one on your breastplate and breathe. As you breathe in His Truth, you can breathe out anything that hinders righteous living.

Inhale . . . exhale . . . inhale . . . exhale . . . there’s power in rest.

Gospel of Peace

Stand firm in peace! The enemy loves to disrupt our peace and break down our joy. The gospel is founded on His love and peace, just as our feet must be founded on secure, solid ground.

Ironically, true peace can be best revealed in the midst of battle, among chaos and commotion. The gospel is based on our having a peace beyond understanding (Phil 4:7) – having peace with God establishes our relationship with Him so we can experience the peace of God.

The word ‘shalom’ refers to an overall, deeply entrenched sense of harmony, health, and wholeness in the midst of chaos. Not sure about you, but just the idea of shalom makes me sigh deeply with a slow ‘yesssssss’.

So let’s step forward with the gospel of peace wrapped tightly around our feet because our Mighty King is our firm foundation!

For more, read 2 Thes 3:16, Romans 5:1, Isaiah 26:3-4, Col 3:15, 2 Cor 13:11, Psalm 85:10, and Jude 1:2

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:16-17

Shield of Faith

If faith is believing in something we cannot see, then I’m super grateful the shield is the largest piece of armor!

Pete Briscoe describes Christian faith as a mystery. ‘What is a mystery? According to Scripture, a mystery is something formerly hidden in God from all human eyes, but now revealed through Christ, and made understandable to His people by the Holy Spirit.’ So once again, He equips us for battle!

With our shield of faith held high, we can act like God is telling the truth! The beauty of our shields is the more the merrier and stronger. In seasons of doubt and struggling faith, we need our sisters’ shields to protect us. In seasons of big belief and full faith, we need to grab the hands of our sisters, link shields, and move forward.

Keep your shield up because no matter what, OUR GOD IS BIGGER!

For more, read Proverbs 30:5, Hebrews 11:1 & 12:2, Matthew 21:21, Galatians 2:16, James 1:3, 2:17, & 2:22, and Romans 10:10

Helmet of Salvation

Our mind is a battlefield – don’t leave it exposed! The helmet of salvation provides comprehensive coverage and protection. We put on our salvation, our free gift, and grab hold of all the life-giving benefits of truth, grace, and faith.

‘Your salvation requires you to turn back to me and stop your silly efforts to save yourselves.’ – Isaiah 30:15

Our salvation occurs the moment we ask the Jesus to be our Lord and Savior. But we daily walk in salvation when we apply it to restore, protect, and shield us from daily attacks of the enemy. Our battle plan of salvation is to identify, confess, and dismantle these lies and replace our thoughts with truth, knowing our true identity is in Christ alone!

Go deeper and read Ephesians 2:8-10 and Colossians 3:2-3

Sword of the Spirit/Word

The Word of God is an alive and active weapon! Hebrews 4:12 clearly states its power – For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy, like a two-mouthed sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bone and marrow meet. It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and secret motives of our hearts.

Did you notice the sword is the only offensive piece of the Armor of God? The sword can directly be used to fight when the Spirit empowers us through His Word. Some describe this is RHEMA, a specific word which the Holy Spirit puts in our hearts and minds for a specific time and purpose. The key is the listen to Him and align your strategy to His Word before we take any action.

Raise your swords, Ladies! Keep His Word held high – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually!

Read Psalms 19:7-8 and Proverbs 12:18

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

ephesians 6:18

Finally . . . pray with power. The Mighty King and Commander wants you. He desires to specifically hear your heart and listen to your soul. Don’t hold back your emotions – whisper, shout, laugh, cry. My relationship with God and my role as His warrior was transformed in a dark season when I authentically yelled in anger at Him. Our God can take it, Ladies. His power is made perfect in our weakness. When in doubt, pray. When in praise, pray. Just pray in His power!

In their book Faithfully Fit, Claire Cloninger and Laura Baar wrote ‘If the Word is daily spiritual food, prayer is the enzyme that digest that food and applies it to our lives. Prayer is the exercise that transforms spiritual food into spiritual muscle so we can do daily battle with the challenges and temptations that confront us as we strive to change our habits and behaviors. Prayer turns a belief into a relationship.’

‘If we, the lionesses of God, are ever going to produce a sound of such magnitude, it will require a change in our present posture. To have the ability to roar, we must drop our high-held heads to bow. This stance of humility and prayer will position us to receive a fresh infilling of the breath of God’s spirit. I believe this roar will happen as our intake of God’s spirit exceeds our capacity to contain His fullness of life. When we can no longer hold back His truth, love, and goodness, we’ll release a stirring declaration of ALL God is.’
