Inner Strength

When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

ephesians 3:14-19 NLT

When it comes to food and fitness, our culture puts emphasis on gaining strength and having control. Yet when it comes to freedom in Christ, His emphasis is on celebrating weakness and losing control.

Before we go any further, we have to break through the barriers of self-sufficiency and private struggles. Whether we put our health on the back burner or eat and weigh ourselves in secret, the enemy uses food and fitness to isolate us from each other and from Him. Shame and/or pride settles in on our health and wellness journey, and we move forward on our own. And it’s exhausting . . .

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

But Jesus changes everything! His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9-10), and His Spirit will empower us with inner strength (Eph 3:16b)!

So let’s be real and share about our struggles with health and wellness and anything else. We truly are better and stronger together – together with the Spirit and with fellow believers. As we abide in Him and in biblical community, strength and freedom will come!

  1. Libby you’re so right about current culture celebrating self-made strength & a guise of control, being opposite of what Christ wants us to celebrate! Not that we celebrate physical unhealthiness lol, but we’re to celebrate our outward strength being a reflection of inner surrender to a God that IS strength and IS in control! I can be the person who hates to eat in front of other people, so thanks for the reminder that we’re a community that celebrates health, not control!
